Dr. Michael O’Grady

MBChB (Otago), MMedSc (Distinction), FRACS

Mike is a New Zealand trained General Surgeon who specialises in General and Colorectal surgery.

He completed medical school at the University of Otago in Dunedin then spent three years working at Whanganui Hospital as a junior doctor. He progressed rapidly through his surgical training, working as a registrar in various public hospitals throughout Aotearoa before becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He dedicated a further year to subspecialty training in colorectal surgery, operating with the busy colorectal team at Waikato Hospital. Mike earned a Master's Degree in General Surgery with a focus on diverticular disease and the gut microbiome, areas in which he has authored several research papers.

Alongside his private practice, Mike also serves as a Consultant General Surgeon at Whanganui Hospital where he performs his more complex colorectal surgeries for conditions such as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and diverticular disease. He is a fully accredited endoscopist, participating in the New Zealand Bowel Screening Program. Mike undertakes regular national and international medical education to stay up to date with the latest advances in surgical management. He also devotes time to instructing New Zealand and Australian surgical trainees in specialised skills courses.

When he's not in the operating room, Mike and his young family love to get outdoors and enjoy all New Zealand has to offer, whether hiking, biking, skiing or hunting. At home he enjoys tackling home improvement projects and working on his small rural block where he admits there's nothing quite like the fun of operating a digger!
